Let There Be Night: Testimony on Behalf of the Dark, Bogard, Paul ISBN: 9780874173284
The Origins of Basque Nationalism is the authoritative text regarding the foundation and early years of the Basque ethnonationalist movement in its modern guise, from 1876 through 1904. The book is so comprehensive and definitive that it has virtually obviated the need for additional research on this phase of the movement. The author has updated his original text, published in Spanish in 1979, with previously unpublished comments, making this translation a second edition as well. In The Origins of Basque Nationalism, Javier Corcuera Atienza effectively merges biography, social history, and intellectual history into a complex, nuanced study. While most American scholars writing about Basque politics ignore the creative features of Basque nationalism, Corcuera carefully differentiates and juxtaposes various types of Basque nationalist and regional thinking, and, thus, its broad appeal. The author's detailed, dynamic approach rounds out our too often static vision of the nationalists' programs and goals. His work prevents us from dismissing nationalism and nationalists with a few vague and simple-minded phrases about separatism and separatists. Furthermore, the author takes the time to locate Basque nationalism within the broader European intellectual and social needs of the late nineteenth century. This is an historical case study addressing broader themes of industrialization, modernization, and the appearance of the social question - modern class conflict.

Tyrannosaurus Sue: The Extraordinary Saga of Largest, Most Fought Over T. Rex Ever Found, Fiffer, Steve ISBN: 9780716794622
In 1990, the skeleton of a battle-scarred Tyrannosaurus rex matriarch was found, virtually complete, in what many call the most spectacular dinosaur fossil discovery to date. Not just another dinosaur book, Tyrannosaurus Sue is a fascinating introduction to the centuries-old history of commercial fossil hunting, a legal thriller and a provocative look at academic versus commercial science and the chase for the money that fuels both. - Steve Fiffer, an attorney who has followed the story for the past seven years, has captured the whole range of characters and issues embroiled in the fight for Sue. Fiffer communicates both the excitement over Sue's discovery and the motivations, manoeuvrings, and absurdities of the various forces attempting to control her destiny.

Strand: An Odyssey of Pacific Ocean Debris, Henderson, Bonnie ISBN: 9780870712999
In Strand, travel writer and amateur naturalist Bonnie Henderson traces the stories of wrack washed up on the mile-long stretch of Oregon beach she has walked regularly for more than a decade. Hendersonas writing conveys both a keen attention to the specifics of place and an expansive field of vision. The burned hull of a long-abandoned fishing boat, a glass fishing float, the egg case of a skate, a beached minke whale, an unusual number of dead murres, and an athletic shoe are the starting points for essays that reach across the globe. Henderson takes readers from Coos Bay, Oregon, to Vancouver, B.C.; from the currents circulating through the North Pacific to the aEastern Garbage Patcha between Hawaii and California; from Chinaas Shenzhen Special Economic Zone to fishing villages on the coast of Hokkaido, Japan. As Henderson uncovers these odysseys, she meditates on current issues, events, and phenomenaaoil spills, the proliferation of ocean debris, international trade, the evolution of sharks, and the survival prospects of whales. The characters that emerge range from the worldas leading minke whale researchers to the crew of a Coast Guard airbase to a small-town salvager of wrecked fishing boats, glued to the radio and praying for disaster. Strand offers a thoughtful look at the surprisingly far-ranging journeys of what washes up on our Pacific shores.
